SEATTLE, April 17, 2024 /CNW/ -- Holland America Line is debuting "Glacier Day" on its Alaska cruises as it rolls out new programming within its "We Love Alaska" on board experience. The new offerings include Alaska Up Close presentations as well as culinary and beverage experiences to help foster a deeper connection to the people, history and culture of the state. The 2024 season kicks off April 27 from Vancouver and May 4 from Seattle.

A 7-day one-way cruise north- or southbound from Vancouver, B.C., or Whittier, Alaska. A new Alaska Seafood Boil will be offered once per cruise in Lido Market for a surcharge. The foodie feast will serve Ivar's Northwest-Style Clam Chowder, Dungeness Cruise Clusters, Alaska Salmon, Penn Cove Clams, Penn Cove Mussels and a Shrimp Bucket, with Triple Berry Crisp and vanilla ice cream for dessert.

Hubbard is the longest tidewater glacier (meaning it ends at the ocean) in North America. But unlike nearly every other tidewater glacier on the continent, Hubbard is advancing, not retreating; it’s forever pushing a little further into the bay. Chunks of ice that break off become floaties for seals, who like the bergs because orca sonar doesn’t work well among them. Hubbard Glacier cruises are so popular because of the glacier’s three-story icebergs that cannon into crystal waters, a process called calving. On clear days, Hubbard turns a stunning deep blue and on cloudy ones, its many ripples and icebergs shimmer in soft light.

Among the many scenic gems on Alaska’s southeast coastline, Hubbard Glacier is the most dramatic. Comprised of the longest river of ice in North America, beginning in Canada and flowing 76 miles to Russell Fjord, the glacier itself originates at Mount Logan, North America’s second-tallest mountain. And, while 95% of the world’s glaciers are retreating, Hubbard Glacier is still advancing. Hubbard Glacier is one of the few Alaska glaciers that’s advancing and not succumbing to climate change. It sounds uplifting, but many fear that the expanding glacier will block the entrance to the fjord.

Its unique glacial cycle is prompted by excess precipitation cooling when it meets the St. Elias Mountains, turning the moisture into snow which subsequently feeds the glacier. Such is its force, that in 1986 and 2002, Hubbard Glacier blocked the entrance to Russell Fiord for several weeks, until ice calving reopened the channel. Hubbard Glacier is named after Gardiner Hubbard, the first President of The National Geographical Society, a tribute awarded in 1890.

As the largest advancing tidewater glacier in North America, Hubbard Glacier’s terminal face is the dramatic end of a process that began 450 years ago as snowfall on the slopes of Mount Logan. The blue wall of ice rises 350 feet above the waterline and extends 250 feet below the sea. Movement of up to 36 feet every day results in daily calving—breathtaking moments where ice cleaves off the wall, and can be the size of ten story buildings.
Each Glacier Discovery itinerary showcases two pristine wilderness areas, home to some of the best glaciers in Alaska. Northbound sailings feature both Glacier Bay and College Fjord. Southbound sailings cruise Glacier Bay and Hubbard Glacier. Reel in salmon in Ketchikan, soar 1,800 feet up on the tramway in Juneau, ride the rails to a gold rush camp in Skagway.
New Exclusive 'Killer Whale Pale Ale' Available On BoardHolland America Line is debuting a new "Killer Whale Pale Ale" on all Alaska cruises. The beer was produced in collaboration with Pike Brewing – Seattle's oldest craft brewery – and features notes of honey, citrus and tropical fruits. The label artwork was created in collaboration with Native Artist Rico Worl, a member of the Tlingit and Athabascan community, who also designed the Native artwork featured on the Alaska menus. The Killer Whale Pale Ale label represents the food chain in the Pacific Northwest, with a seal deftly maneuvering out of the grasp of a killer whale.
It straddles the US and Canadian borders in Southeast Alaska and is one of the few glaciers advancing rather than retreating, gaining an average of 80 feet each year at its current rate of growth. For about a century, Hubbard Glacier ice margin continues to advance. In May 1986, the glacier surged forward, blocking Russell Fjord's outlet and creating "Russell Lake." The lake filled with runoff and its water level rose 25 m (82 ft). Around midnight on October 8, 1986 the dam began to give way and during the next 24 hours, 5.3 cubic km (1.3 cu miles) of water gushed through the gap. The fjord was reconnected to ocean at the previous level. This was the 2nd largest glacial lake outburst flood in recorded history, and had equivalent flow of 35 Niagara Falls.
The new offerings include Alaska Up Close presentations as well as culinary and beverage experiences to help guests immerse themselves in the history and culture of the state. The 2024 season kicks off on April 27 from Vancouver and May 4 from Seattle. Hubbard Glacier is located in eastern Alaska (USA) and partially of Yukon (Canada).
